Sign of the times giveaway

Tidying up the office I found this goodie.

For those who started with Windows and pen-drives: it is a 5.25" single sided floppy disk (with a capacity of 160 or 180 Kb) by the Massachusetts Mineral and Mining Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing company pimped as an analog clock. At the time floppies were so expensive they could offer you a complete clock when buying a 10-pack DS.

I'm emotional fool enough wanting to keep it. But I found two copies, this one is a giveaway. You want it ? Here's how to apply:

  • Make an original comment why you should get it.
  • Visit the SDN meeting coming December 11 in Ede. The program on itself is more than good enough to visit. No worries, I'm not speaking J. In case you can't make it there due to distance or language problems, include an original way to get the clock to you.

See you in Ede.

Hi Peter, the company is actually "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing" (they officially changed their name to 3M in 2002)

hi Ben, thanks for correcting me there. To us Europeans Minnesot and Massachusets are both two lesser known states. Manufacturing/Mining.. well it was a shot more or less in the rigth direction :)

Over here the brand 3M is no longer found amongst supplies. AFAIK their producst are now sold under the name Imation. Correct me if I'm wrong :)

Ha, I figured as much about minnesota vs. massachusettes :)

3M spun off Imation as a new company in the mid to late 90's, I believe they took all their data storage stuff, like floppies and CD/DVDs etc.

I think I still have some Inmac floppies with a "Lifetime Warranty".

Is Inmac still even around?  I should try to get some replacements one day....

AFAIK Inmac <> Imation. Who'se lifetime? The disk's physical loifetime, your own or the disk practical lifetime. Another part of tidying up was getting rid of two giant boxes with floppies. Copied all essentail material on one CD and now I have shelf space!
