Locating the Component services manager in Vista

Com (plus) is not dead (yet). But the component services manager seems to have disappeared from the administrative tools in the Vista control panel. Nevertheless you can start the management console straight from windows\System32\comexp.msc.

It took some searching to find it. Why is it hidden?

I haven't tried this yet, but, like most things in Vista, I think if you start typing "Component ser.." in the start menu (Win + R) it'll list the correct shortcut. I'll have to wait until I get back home to try for sure. I hope it works :)

That's what I expected too. Search found the phrase in a ppt presentation attached to message in some mail-folder (!) but not the manager. They did a good job on hiding. (I think the windows sytem folders are not indexed)

Have you tried connecting to another machine from component services on Vista?  I'm getting "the stub received bad data" error and "the parameter is incorrect".  Any ideas?

I've seen these error's before. They have to do with insufficient rights. Horrific puzzle..

Again, most likely a rights matter, Which can even get more complicated when AD wants a say in the matter.

Component Services (COM+) seems to be the "black sheep" of Windows features. I talked once to a Microsoft employee about some of the breaking changes (security etc) made to COM+ (XP SP2) and he said "nobody uses COM+ anyway" (!!??!!).

They do use it. Whether they like it is another question :)

As Andres has said, use the MMC., One console for all administration apps works best for me. Most  administrators I know use a custom mmc. Its simple with one link pinned to your start menu.

Still i agree MS should make it easier to provide people with the choice.
