November 2005 - Posts

  • Why can't we build 1.1 apps with VS 2005?

I’ve heard and read a lot of comments over the months about why can’t we build applications for the 1.1 framework using the VS 2005 IDE?  Simple.  VS 2005 only targets the 2.0 framework.  However, it appears as though making the IDE target multiple versions of the framework is something they are taking seriously and working on.

One of the Visual Studio developers, John Rivard, has started blogging as of yesterday, and he starts off wonderfully by explaining Why Visual Studio targets only one version of the .NET Framework.  No need for me to elaborate any more on the subject, John does a wonderful job of explaining.

  • Presenting The Rest of Visual Studio 2005 Launch Event

Monday, December 05, 2005 (PST) - The REST of Visual Studio 2005
    Speaker: Raymond Lewallen
Location: Lunch: Oklahoma City OSU/OKC Student Center
    Dinner: Oklahoma City Downtown Library

TOO MUCH MATERIAL, TOO LITTLE TIME…
For the first time we are actually planning 2 separate presentations for our lunch and dinner meetings. In the wake of the launch of VS 2005, SQL 2005, Biz Talk 2006, and, of course, the .NET Framework 2.0, there is just too much material to cover for just one short meeting. This month we plan to maximize our opportunity to bring you the most of this new material with different presentations for each session. Following the November 17th,  highly attended and outstanding MSDN Event, “The Best of Visual Studio 2005 Launch Event” here in OKC, our own Raymond Lewallen will bring you “The Rest of Visual Studio 2005”

Lunch topic:    Visual Studio 2005 Launch Event – The Rest of Visual Studio 2005

SQLCLR – How, When and Why

Raymond will talk about common uses for SQLCLR and when using the SQLCLR is appropriate, as well as walk through Visual Basic code examples on creating and using objects within the SQLCLR.  Raymond will also discuss creating web services from directly within Sql Server.

Evening topic:  Visual Studio 2005 Launch Event – The Rest of Visual Studio 2005

    VB 2005 Language Enhancements

Raymond will explore many of the new enhancements to the Visual Basic 2005 language and go through examples on using them to demonstrate how they work, such as Generics, Using, TryCast, IsNot and the new My namespace to name a few.

For the last 11 years, Raymond Lewallen has worked with more programming languages than he can recall, but currently specializes in VB and C# as well as Sql Server.  Working primarily in the public sector during his career, Raymond has designed and built several very high profile enterprise level applications for all levels of the government, and currently works on a project for the Federal Aviation Administration as a contractor employed by L-3 Communications, Titan Group.

  • Rest In Peace, Eddie Guerrero

Rest in peace, Eddie Guerrero.  As a fan of WWE wrestling, I’m very saddened by the loss of one of its greatest entertainers.  I could say lots about EG, as he was one of my favorites and a crowd favorite.  EG was a great person, inside the ring and out.  Its very hard coping with the loss of EG, and I'll miss him very much.  I cry everytime I see a tribute and just have a hard time believing he is gone.

  • November CTP of Enterprise Library 2.0 released

We all know that Visual Studio, Sql Server and BizTalk were all released in a big product launch yesterday.  But did you know that the new Enterprise Library 2.0 November CTP was also released yesterday?  If you have your RTM bits of you dev and server products, be sure and get the latest Enterprise Library as well.
  • Visual Studio 2005 Product Launch - My Fan Club Attendees

As we all know, the big product launch party/event/whatever is happening in San Francisco today.  Here is a friend of mine, also president of my fan club, who is attending.  I sure hope he doesn’t get beat up wearing this T-Shirt to the event.

  • Visual Studio 2005 RTM - Bugs Bugs Everywhere?

So I come in this morning and start catching up on the 339 unread rss feed posts in my reader.  After 10 minutes, I’ve already come across 4 great developers who have uncovered bugs in the VS 2005 RTM :|

I myself haven't gotten very deep into RTM yet because I've been so busy doing other stuff, but somebody even mentioned that they thought Beta 2 was more stable than RTM.  I'd hate to go look at the MSDN Feedback for VS2005 at the end of this week.  "Yes, we realize that is a bug.  It will be fixed in the next major release."  Ouch.

    Wesner Moise

    Frans Bouma

    Roy Osherove

    Anatoly Lubarsky

    Rick Strahl

No doubt that as I continue catching up, this list is going to increase, but hopefully not significantly.  We’ll see.  I'll continue to add to this list, so check back periodically.
